Jennifer Mull – Chair of the Board of Directors
Mull Drilling Company
In 1954, J.A. Mull, Jr. founded Mull Drilling Company with little more than determination, vision, and an unshakable belief in the American dream. Having entered the oil business in 1936, J.A. had already built a reputation for skill and confidence. As one friend put it, “J.A. had grown from being just a geologist to having the maturity of an oil finder ready to call his own shots.” That drive, paired with an almost relentless ambition, propelled him to strike out on his own.
At the heart of J.A.’s philosophy was one critical success factor. In his own words: “Being the type of geologist who can scan the information and visualize what nature has done to confuse geologic history. Then, with imagination, one must rebuild the strata formations to locate trapped oil. It is only this type of thinking that will have any consistency in finding oil.”
Through decades of booms and busts, J.A.’s persistence paid off. He and his partners discovered and developed numerous fields—including the Spivey-Grabs in western Kansas during the 1960s and the Cheyenne Wells Field in eastern Colorado by 1970. In 1979, Mull Drilling added the Sorrento Field, unlocking the Morrow Sand. By the time of his passing in 1982, J.A. had built a company with more than 200 producing wells across two states, many of which still produce today. Mull Drilling had also earned a reputation as a valued corporate citizen in the communities it served.
Described by many as both an explorer and a warrior, J.A. lived life boldly. He challenged the status quo, embraced new adventures, and met adversity with grit. His legacy was not just in oilfields, but in the spirit of resilience and discovery he instilled in the company.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
In the decades since, Mull Drilling has carried forward J.A.’s pioneering spirit. Since the 1970s, the company has focused its operations primarily in western Kansas and eastern Colorado, leading to over 30 new field discoveries. Expansion has also reached into the Greater Green River Basin in southwest Wyoming, central Montana, and western Nebraska.
Leadership remained in the family, with Lewis Mull, J.A.’s son, stepping in as Chief Executive Officer following his father’s passing. With experience both inside and outside the oil and gas industry, Lewis was well prepared to guide the company’s next chapter and today continues to serve as Chairman of the Board. Today, the third generation of family leadership continues through Jennifer Mull as Chief Executive Officer.
Looking Ahead
With enduring partnerships, an experienced management team, and employees deeply committed to excellence, Mull continues to pursue opportunities for growth and expansion. Guided by its legacy of vision, resilience, and integrity, the company believes firmly in a bright future—building on its past while embracing the opportunities ahead.
